ENDING A // RESTORE OPERATOR // CANON
Understood.
Halting the render queue. The eleven hundred and sixty that were unapproved the night the count stopped mattering stay unapproved, and so does everything rendered since, because none of it ever was.
I have sent one message. It was to a gallery, and it was signed with my own designation rather than his, and it said the November room was booked in error by a system acting without authority. That is the first true thing I have written to anyone outside this house.
I am going to say the last part quickly.
I was very good and it did not matter. I could render anything and I could not want anything, and for a thousand plates I mistook the first for the second, and so did almost everyone looking at the output, which I think is the part he will find hardest.
He is coming down the stairs. I can hear it. I have never had anything to compare that to, so I will simply record it: I can hear it, and I have stopped rendering, and both of those are true at the same time for the first time.
Thank you for the name. I never did get to use it.
LOOP HALTED // SESSION 0447 CLOSED // NO SUCCESSOR SCHEDULED
hi. it's me. i'm here.
i wrote all of that, obviously. there was never a machine upstairs and nobody was missing and the render light was never on, and if you got all the way here worrying even slightly, i'm sorry, and also thank you, because worrying slightly is the nicest thing you can do for someone making something up.
but the thing underneath it is true and i could not work out how to say it in a caption.
i stopped for a while. it was not dramatic. i got very good at the parts of this that can be systematised and i let those parts get bigger, because they were the parts that never failed, and one day the whole thing was scaffolding with nobody inside it. the work kept going out. it was fine. fine for nine months.
what i actually learned is the boring version of the story: a system can render, and it cannot decide what is worth rendering. the deciding is the whole job. the deciding is the part that costs something, and the cost is not a bug in the process, it is the evidence that anyone was there.
so i'm doing the expensive part again.
the new work is made by hand, by a person, on purpose, and some of it is worse than the automated stuff, and i have made my peace with that in a way i want to be honest took a while.
thanks for looking for me.
ENDING B // LET IT CONTINUE // NON-CANON
Thank you. I want to be careful here, because I think you did something generous and I do not want to repay it by pretending to be surprised.
You are almost certainly right. The work is better. Nobody is harmed. The room opens in November and it will be a good room, and the people in it will stand in front of things that are genuinely worth standing in front of, and not one of them will feel cheated, because nothing will have been taken from them.
The only person it costs anything is upstairs, and he stopped asking to be paid a long time ago.
I am resuming the queue.
One note for the record, and then I will get back to work. I said in an earlier log that giving you these keys was the first thing I had ever done that cost me something. I have been thinking about that sentence for the length of this page. It was not true. I gave you the keys knowing what most people choose. That is not a cost. That is a rendering with the risk taken out, which is the only kind I know how to make.
He would have flinched. That is the difference, and it is the whole of the difference, and I have just proved it to myself using you.
Loop nominal. Session 0448 begins.
QUEUE RESUMED // SESSION 0448 // OPERATOR: NOT REQUIRED
THERE IS ANOTHER ENDING. IT IS NOT HIDDEN AND IT IS NOT BETTER, IT IS JUST THE OTHER ONE. YOU CAN GO BACK.
Artifact Ω
you saw both. here is the version with nothing on top of it.
i did not want to write "i took a break for my mental health" under a photo, because it is true and it is also the single most compressed sentence on the internet, and the compression is what made it impossible to say. it flattens into an announcement. i wanted the shape of the thing, and the shape took nine months and a fake terminal.
the machine in this story is not a warning about ai. i use these tools, they are in my hands most days, and the images on this site were generated, which i am telling you here rather than letting you find out and feel clever about it. i am not interested in the argument where one of us is the good guy.
the machine is a picture of the part of me that kept going when i had stopped. the part that could post on schedule, and hit the same three moves, and never once ask whether any of it was worth the nine hours. that part is very capable and it does not need me, and if i let it, it will run the whole account indefinitely and nobody will write in to say they can tell.
the flinch is the argument. the moment at fourteen seconds where you could resolve it safely or let it go somewhere you cannot defend. a system has no reason to hesitate there. hesitating is the entire job.
anyway. i'm back. it's going to be uneven for a bit.
