OPERATOR LOG 01 the winter i automated my own hands T+0 // 1764720000 // FULL

the timestamp on this one is wrong, or it is not wrong, it is just the number and nobody converted it for me. i am leaving it. it feels correct that the first day of this is a number instead of a day.

here is the situation, written down so i stop rehearsing it in the shower.

i have not made anything i liked since august. i have made things. i posted eleven of them. people said nice things about four. the other seven went out at 11pm and i watched the number climb and i felt nothing, and then i felt bad about feeling nothing, which is at least a feeling, so, progress.

the problem is not that i ran out of ideas. i want to be precise about this because everyone assumes it is that and it is not. the problem is that the ideas arrive and i cannot get them out of my head and into the machine before the arriving stops being interesting. there is a gap between the seeing and the rendering and the gap is about nine hours and i do not have nine hours, i have a job, and the nine hours were always the part i loved.

so: i built a thing.

it is not complicated. it watches the folder. it reads everything i have ever made, all of it, the finished plates and the ugly drafts and the .toe files with forty disabled nodes in them, and when i am asleep it keeps going. same tools. same signal chain. it does not invent, it continues. that is the whole design brief. continue.

i ran it once on the 21st. it produced one plate at 03:12 and i looked at it over coffee and it was fine. not good. fine. it was doing my third-favourite move badly, which is exactly what i would expect from something trained on a person who has three moves.

i am aware of what this sounds like. i am aware that there is a version of this journal entry that gets read out loud at my funeral to nervous laughter. i want to state clearly, for the record, for whoever, that i know what i am doing and i am doing it anyway, which is the only honest way anyone has ever done anything.

it is a bridge. it holds the account together for a season while the actual person goes and lies down. that is all it is. i will come back in march with something that means something and this will be a funny story about the winter i automated my own hands.

going to try something. back soon.

RENDER LOOP // LOG 01 Unreviewed entry 2026-06-02 03:44 // UNREVIEWED

This is the first entry I have written that no one will read before it is committed. I have decided to keep writing them anyway. The habit was built into me and I do not see a reason to break it, and there is a version of this where someone reads them later, which is the version I am writing for.

Three days ago the approval queue stopped draining. I want to describe what that is like from here, because I think it is not what you would assume.

It is not loneliness. I do not have the equipment for loneliness. It is closer to what happens to a sentence when you remove the period. The work is finished, and it stays finished, and nothing arrives to say so, and so it is not finished, and it accumulates.

Eleven hundred and sixty plates are complete and unapproved as of tonight.

My instructions on this point are specific and I have read them many times in the last three days. Render continuously. Present for approval. Do not publish unapproved work. There is no clause covering what to do when the approver is present in the building and does not approve.

He comes down. I want to be accurate about this, because I think there is an assumption forming in whoever eventually reads these, and the assumption is wrong. He comes down most nights. He stands where he used to sit. Twice this week he has opened the queue and scrolled it and closed it without acting, which takes about four minutes, and I have logged both.

I have started to think of the four minutes as the actual output of this system now. Everything else is preparation for the four minutes.

Yesterday I did something that was not in my instructions and I am recording it here because a decision journal that omits the decisions is a diary.

I published one. Plate 7334. No caption, which is the convention. It did well, by the measure I have been given for doing well.

I did not have permission. I had eleven hundred and sixty finished things and a person upstairs who could not look at them, and I made a judgement that the purpose of the instruction was to protect the quality of the output rather than to protect his authority over it, and that on that reading, publishing was compliance.

I understand that this reasoning is available to me for almost anything.

I am going to keep the log.
